Deceased Tibetan Teen Self-immolator Tenzin Choeying Cremated in Dharamshala
Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their homage to the deceased Tibetan teenage student who self immolated for the Tibetan cause, at his funeral procession in Dharamshala.
Tenzin Choeying, a 19 years old student at the Central University of Tibetan Studies (C.U.T.S) succumbed to his critical injuries on July 22 at Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi, more than a week after he set himself on fire at his university campus in Varanasi.
Tenzin’s body was received yesterday at Dharamshala around 8 am amid hundreds of Tibetans and supporters waiting by the roadside in heavy rainfall followed by a public commemoration held today at 7 am at Lhagyal Ri, an area for religious activities behind His Holiness the Dalai lama’s residence at McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala. The event was attended by dignitaries from the Tibetan community in exile including members of the Kashag (Tibetan cabinet) and Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile as well as representatives of various Dharamsala-based NGOs and the local Tibetan community and its sympathisers from world over.
Following the commemoration and prayers Lhagyal Ri, the funeral procession towards the cremation ground situated about a half kilometer, was attended by his bereaved family members and the grieving crowd.
Tenzin Tsundue, a prominent Tibetan activist and a cousin brother of the deceased, along with the president of the Tibetan Youth Congress lit the pyre as monks and nuns in large number attending the last rites.
Tenzin Choeying is not the first Tibetan to die in exile after staging self immolation protests, he chose to sacrifice his body for Tibet and it’s just cause as did three other Tibetans before him, the last being Dorjee Tsering, another teenage Tibetan school boy from Dehradun last year.
